Everybody had concerns with getting to Mars the way we did, with
parachutes, and an airbag, and hitting the surface. We bounced about 10
stories high, with about 20 Gs. But once we got over that hurdle, we had to
get the Rover safely off the Lander, and once we were on the surface
driving around, over time it became almost commonplace. Our confidence
grew, and the scientists were telling us that the Rover would last a year,
not to worry, to take more risks, and go drive over that huge boulder. And
we were tempering that with our desire to avoid doing something
inappropriate that would cause the Rover to flip over, which I thought
would be a disaster. There's no way to recover from that. So we were trying
to be as careful as we could, yet still achieve good things.
